Central Hokkaido sits far from the sea, so the snow falls colder and drier than on the coast. Furano town has a large resort and is the easiest base. Around the active volcano Tokachidake, a cluster of hot-spring lodges serves as trailheads for some of Hokkaido’s classic ski tours.
Tours here range from half-day climbs through birch forest to long days onto the open upper slopes, depending on conditions. The area pairs naturally with Asahidake for a week of central Hokkaido skiing.
