Backcountry gear checklist for Japan

Avalanche safety (non-negotiable)

• Avalanche transceiver (beacon), 457 kHz — digital with 3 antennas
• Probe, 240 cm or longer (the snowpack is deep)
• Metal shovel
• Airbag pack (optional). Check your airline's rules before flying with a gas cylinder, or rent one in Japan.

Touring setup

• Touring bindings or splitboard, or snowshoes for resort-access sidecountry (ask your guide)
• Climbing skins that fit your skis — bring skin wax for cold, humid snow
• Wide skis or a powder board. Japan's snow rewards float.
• Poles with powder baskets

Clothing

• Waterproof shell — coastal snow can be wet, especially in Honshu and in spring
• Warm puffy for breaks. Hokkaido and high volcanoes can drop well below −15 °C.
• Goggles plus a spare lens, and a face mask for wind
• Spare gloves (they get wet fast in deep snow)

Pack

• 25–35 L backpack
• Thermos with hot drink and snacks
• Phone with offline maps, and a power bank (cold drains batteries)
• Small first-aid kit

Renting in Japan

Popular areas such as Niseko, Hakuba and Myoko have shops that rent touring setups and avalanche gear. In less visited areas availability is limited, so tell us what you need when you request a guide — many guides can lend safety gear.
