It isn't legally required everywhere, but it is strongly recommended if you don't know the area. Avalanche bulletins are limited, local rules differ between resorts, and whiteouts, tree wells and open creeks catch out visitors every season. A local guide also finds the best snow for the day.

For sidecountry and gentle tours you should be confident on red/blue runs and in some off-piste snow. For big-mountain terrain in Hakuba, Tateyama or Hakusan you should ski steep terrain in variable snow. Tell us your level and we will suggest the right area and guide.

Hokkaido and northern Honshu are best from mid-December to February for deep powder. From March to May the high alpine areas open up for spring touring, and Tateyama and Gassan offer skiing into June.

Each guide sets their own price, depending on the area, group size and whether the day uses lifts, ropeways or pure touring. Per-person prices drop for larger groups. We send you a quote before anything is booked, and requesting one is free.

No. The guide's price is the price you pay. Partner guides pay us a referral fee.

We only work with guides who hold recognised mountain guide certification (for example the Japan Mountain Guides Association, or IFMGA) and carry liability insurance.

Yes. Splitboarders are welcome on touring days. For resort-access days, some guides use snowshoes for short climbs. Let us know in your request.

Yes. Many guides lend or rent beacons, probes and shovels, and some areas have touring rental shops. Tell us what you need in your request.
