Niseko put Japanese powder on the world map. Cold air from Siberia picks up moisture over the Sea of Japan and drops it as light, deep snow on the Niseko range, day after day through midwinter.

The four resorts on Mt Annupuri follow the Niseko Rules. Leaving the ski area is allowed only through designated gates, and ski patrol opens or closes them depending on conditions. That makes Niseko one of the easiest places in Japan to start skiing backcountry. But the terrain beyond the gates is real avalanche terrain, and every season visitors get lost or caught.

Beyond the resorts, guides lead tours into the quieter Niseko range and up Mt Yotei. Yotei is the perfectly shaped volcano across the valley, and a long day there rewards fit groups with huge descents.
